Tania León (1947).
She is a Cuban composer based in the USA.
Her beginnings in music began at an early age at the Carlos Alfredo Peyrellade Conservatory. At the age of 18 she received her first degree as a music teacher and two years later she obtained a degree in Piano.She received a scholarship from New York to specialize in music education, composition and orchestral conducting.
His compositions are set in the context of contemporary music. It also has a wide range of compositions of which we can find:
-Chamber pieces
-Orchestral pieces
-Vocal pieces
-Works for piano solo
-Operas
-Music for films.
In 2010 he won a Latin Grammy Award in the category "Best Contemporary Classical Composition". With his composition "To and Fro" from the CD "Sonidos cubanos".
10 Years later he received the Pulitzer Prize for music for his composition "Stride".
"Stride", is an orchestral piece that lasts 15 minutes. It features a full orchestra plus a long list of Afro-Cuban percussion. It is inspired by Susan B. Anthony, who was a writer, feminist and fighter for women's suffrage rights.
He currently serves on the Board of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.(among other foundations).
